FIRST MUSCLEHEDZ® CARTOON
EVER DRAWN: MUSCLEHEDZ® character is in a
barber chair bending over and pointing to his back
and saying to the barber - "Just a
little off the back, Pops!" I drew
it in September of 1992.
FAVORITE MUSCLEHEDZ®
CARTOON: I'd say, my favorite toon right now is
WAIST MANAGEMENT - two personal trainers who thought
they were being very clever with their name selection.
Sadly, it's come back to haunt them (people leaving
trash bags in front of their place of business).
Good drawing, short caption - right to the point.
FAVORITE
PART ABOUT CARTOONING: Getting Paid.
LEAST FAVORITE PART
ABOUT CARTOONING: Drawing the rough art, drawing
the finished line art, cutting the frisket paper,
and then airbrushing it. Yeah - that's pretty much
the whole process. I really dislike it - it's very
tedious work.
CARTOONISTS WHO
YOU ADMIRE: Gary Larson (The FAR SIDE®), Bill
Waterson (Calvin & Hobbes®), Berkeley Breathed
(BLOOM COUNTY®)
FAVORITE ANIMATED
CARTOON SERIES: Looney Tunes - the entire catalog.
And anything else with Mel Blanc's voices on it.
FAVORITE AIRBRUSH:
Iawata HP-SB, dual-action. For me, the Lamborghini
of air brushes.
FAVORITE AIRBRUSH
PAINT: Hansa Transparent Watercolor - It's very
hard to get in the U.S. I had it sent from Germany.
I bought a boat-load of it.
FAVORITE AIRBRUSH
PAPER: Frisk CS10 airbrush paper. As far as I
know, this paper is no longer available. I bought
so much of it when I heard it was being discontinued.
I should be okay for another few years.
FAVORITE BODYPARTS
TO DRAW: The upper body, including head.
LEAST FAVORITE BODYPARTS
TO DRAW: Hands and feet - I struggle with digits.
WHAT WOULD YOU BE
DOING IF YOU WEREN'T A CARTOONIST: Well, truthfully,
cartooning is just one thing I do. I also have a business
called PAINT
YOUR OWN GUITAR. I've written several books that
teach intermediates, beginners, and first-timers how
to paint their own guitar and achieve factory-like
results. I've also written for Guitar WORLD magazine
as well.
I also have a MMA/UFC
cartoon that will blow MUSCLEHEDZ away as far as popularlity
goes. I'm currently negotiating with a few companies
to bring it to the public.
Finally, I do a lot
of other stuff as well - from doing custom airbrush
work on guitars for people like Vince Neil of Motley
Crue, to designing websites for companies like HELP-U-SELL,
Labrada, and Zhanna Rotar, and many more.
LONG-TERM CARTOONING
GOALS: To just continue doing what I'm doing and
to continue to make a very good living from it. I
don't think bodybuilding or this cartoon series will
ever be embraced by the general public, so I'm not
thinking that this cartoon series will make me the
next Matt Groenig (The Simpsons). But by the same
token, this cartoon series targets everyone and anyone
who trains with weights or belongs to a gym. That
means, people from Gold's, Bally's, 24-Hour Fitness,
etc... all of these people are my potential audience
and somehow I want to reach them all.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU
TO CREATE MUSCLEHEDZ®?: Poverty.
DO YOU CONSIDER
YOURSELF A MUSCLEHED?: Does the Pope wear a funny
hat? Sorry, your Emenence... Of course I'm a MUSCLEHED.
How else could I keep coming up with these cartoons?
